7thGrade Book Report for February
Use the following topic outline to write a descriptive, organized book report in paragraph form.
Use supportive, detailed examples from the book.
Give specific page references in parentheses, if you quote from the book, but avoid excessive quotation.
Indent the beginning of each paragraph.
Proofread for complete sentences and correct spelling, punctuation, and capitalization.
COVER SHEET
A. Title of book, author, publisher, date of publication
C. Genre
D. Center all information
E. Skip a few lines and put your name, teacher’s name, and the date.
INTRODUCTION
A. State the title of the book (underlined) and the author. Give your reaction/evaluation
B. State the purpose of the paper (are you trying to convince the author to write a sequel? Should we use it for a book club book?)
SETTING:
A. Describe the setting in detail. (When, Where) Be as specific as possible.
B. Does the setting change? Explain.
C. Discuss the relationship/influence of the setting to the plot.
CHARACTERIZATIONS
A. Identify and describe the main character (include his motivation)
B. Identify and describe the dominant people opposing the main character (include his motivation)
C. Identify and describe at least two other characters
D. Explain how each one moves the plot forward
PLOT/CONFLICTS
A. Briefly describe the plot (what was the problem, what were the obstacles to resolving it, how was it resolved)
THEME
A. Identify the theme/main idea of the book. Themes are big ideas (friendship, bullying, perseverance, love, justice, truth, recognition, etc)
B. Give two specific examples from the book which support your idea about the theme. (Use the
page numbers where you find the examples.)
C. Discuss the significance of the theme in your life.
ANALYSIS AND CONCLUSION
A. Give your own opinion and review of the book.
B. Address the effectiveness of the writing. Was is powerful, disturbing, motivating, beautiful?
C. Describe its strengths and weaknesses
D. Explain how you feel about the author’s style of writing, the setting, or the mood of the novel.
E. Tell whether or not it has changed your way of thinking

Ah the ol' book report. Seems like only yesterday I had to write one. They do teach you to pay close attention to what you're reading.
