Unfortunately, sometimes the children also fight and bully each other at recess. Some students stand around in the cold waiting to go back inside. This free time can easily be a time that outside the watchful eye of the teacher, students engage in unproductive encounters such as bullying and teasing.
If recess were structured, students would have an activity assigned to them - either to the individual, the class or the whole school. Fifteen minutes of vigorous walking would allow students a break, fresh air and exercise under the watchful eyes of teachers or other staff members. Or students could be assigned the basketball courts, soccer field or even running tasks. Sports could be rotated among teams of classes or mixed age groups and could be changed according to season as well.
It could be a way to avoid some of the bullying by increasing participation in outdoor sports. The reason for recess- fresh air, a break and exercise - would be met with some of the troubles avoided.
